Part of the story shows how delighted Eva is when her older sister becomes engaged to a French refugee in Stockholm near the end of World War II, but just before the wedding Eva gets to meet Marcel's family for the first time, leaving her with a bewildering change of attitude towards her sister's finacee. She begins to find deception and disillusionment in others, however it soon reveals unpleasant aspects of her own nature, and proves to be a basis for perceptible maturing. Has gentle humor pervaded by a strong sense of the French countryside.)
