(This booklet is to help you know and understand this fascinating area, The Big Badlands of South Dakota. Some people refer to it as the White River Badlands and this area lies chiefly in the southwestern quarter of the state in the drainages of the White, Bad and Cheyenne Rivers. The area teems with jagged peaks that are ribbed with rock layers of varying hardness and fluted with tiny gullies carved by rivulets of rainwater. The stark, intricately eroded pinnacles are so extraordinary that it is hard to believe they are real, and from a distance they seem like the pale ruins of a long-forgotten city rather than simply clay and rock. Spring rains brighten their pastel pink and tan colors, sharpening the contrast with the fresh green of the prairie, the crystal blue sky, and the billows of snowy clouds. This area, or region is world-famous for its badlands formations, with the result that over the years scientists have developed a lot of information about earth formations, extinct life, and workings of erosion. And of note, the portion of the Badlands known as Badlands National Monument is a refuge for many kinds of animals that are found in the northern Great Plains.)
