(This delightfully written book is biographical in character, and tells the story of William John Napier, 9th Lord Napier of Merchiston, who was sent to China in 1834 to seek a settlement between the British sea-traders and the Cantonese authorities. Though known at home as a brave, patient and sensible sailor who started his career at Trafalgar, unfortunately he was seen by the Chinese authorities as a dangerous spy or a 'Barbarian Eye'. Though dealing with much frustration, he continued to try for agreement until struck down by a local fever. However, the story does say that Lord Napier finally noticed a rocky island occupied by only a few fisherman's families, which guarded a fine natural harbour, so he then tried to trade from there (Hong Kong). Based largely upon Lord Napier's own letters and journals, this book provides admirable insight into the story of Western contacts over the century, and about civilisation in England and Scotland in the early 19th century, including life in the court of King William IV.)
