In 1930 the directors of the Field Museum of Chicago presented her with an extraordinary proposal - it was their intention to create a hall of anthropology, which would then be opened to the public, and it would be a 'hall of man', wanting the races of man to look alive, seem actual, and authentic. The task of creating this sculptural 'Hall of Man' now belonged to Malvina Hoffman, and the absorbing project took almost five years. Her expedition's quest for racial types took her into the crowded centers and remote corners of the globe, into cities, jungles, deserts, and in this book she shares the story of her Field Museum years, and also includes absorbing chapters of the story of her own childhood, early professional struggles and achievements, and a section where she leads the reader behind the scenes in sculpture. The illustrations included in this book are of sculptures, portraits, travel scenes, and photographic studies.) Price:
