When Janice Holt was four years old her family moved to Kinta, Oklahoma where her father was to be principal of the new school. And when Janice met Corinne, her new best friend, they lived in the house next door, and like so many of the townspeople were part Choctaw, for Oklahoma had been admitted to the Union only recently, and Kinta, Oklahoma was situated in what had been Indian Territory a few years before. This shows how in these early times how children relied on their imagination for their games, and enjoyed camping, fishing and visits to their grandparents. It also shows us a vanished world, where life was simpler, and yet in some ways more harsh, but in other ways it was a safer world, one in which values were clearly defined, and a child knew where she stood and what was right.)
