Plowden, Gene New York, New York Bonanza Books 1972 0517136597 / 9780517136591 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lyn Godwin
; 96 pages with index; First Bonanza printing by arrangement with Seemann Publishing; Black & white photographs, illustrations; Book block is tight with no names & no marginalia; Tangerine cloth-covered boards with title, author & publisher in black to spine (and bump to top of boards near top-left); A very good solid copy; Bright pictorial dust-jacket with modest shelf & edge wear including some nicks along top-edge & 1/2 inch close tear at top-left of front panel; We have placed the dust-jacket in a protective, removable, clear mylar cover; . (Veteran newsman Gene Plowden, who covered the story of 'Gargantua' the gorilla personally, and who also is an authority on the circus, relates here not only the surface success story, but goes behind the scenes to reveal the stories of the many individuals that were in the gorilla's life such as owners, and keepers. He tells us how the young, terribly mutilated gorilla was nursed to health and domsticated by a remarkable woman, how the maturing animal helped the Ringling Brothers (North) to revive their troubled enterprise, and how the beast's strength and ferocity created a living legend wherever the show went, so much so that millions stood in line through rain, wind and cold to pay admission to see this ugliest, if not largest, member of the ape family ever seen outside the jungles of Africa. Best of all, Plowden tells the story through the eyes and in the words of those who lived and worked with him, capturing the spirit of the era, and the excitement of the circus world in the days of Gargantua the Great.)
