(In this splendid book, Virginia S. Eifert tells many dramatic and moving stories of the Mississippi River's past, and in the end interpreting the compelling personality that is the Mississippi River. There are many events and interesting characters such as Joliet and Marquette who paddled canoes in search of the mouth; La Salle lost the Mississippi and Iberville found it again; There was John Law, the promoter and Lafitte the pirate, John Audubon the bird painter, and even Henry Shreve, the steamboat builder. Mentioned as well is Zebulon Pike, who missed the source, and Henry Schoolcraft who found it, then there was Black Hawk, the warmaker in the North, and Andrew Jackson, the peacemaker in the South. In the meantime, towns were built, strange campaigns of war are fought between the States for possession, and then there are the flatboats, keelboats, steamboats and towboats. The author does note that this book is history in the sense that it is based upon historical facts, while certain fictional character are used as imagination to tell the events.)
