With headquarters in San Francisco, Amadeo Peter Giannini began his original Bank of Italy with a number of small farmers, mostly of Italian descent. After the great fire and earthquake of 1906 larger banks were forced to close their doors, while Giannini set up two planks on the Washington Street wharf and continued to build the business. By 1930 when the name changed to Bank of America, he had blazed a trail up and down California developing local agriculture and commerce through his system of strong bank branches.)
