 1.  Cactus Thorn: A Novella

; Wraps; 122 pages; Western Literature series; Foreword & Afterword by Melody Graulich; Textblock is tight with no names or marginalia; Tiny mark on front-free endpaper; ......(The foreword and afterword provide the background and biographical information about Mary Austin, who spent years in what she referred to as the 'country of the lost borders' or the desert, with the years meaning much to her for she returned to the Southwest for her final years. She lived successfully as a writer in artist communities such as Carmel, Greenwich Village, and London, and eventually published a series of books on her cherished theme - the influence of the desert landscape on human character, culture and art. Having said that, for one reason or another 'Cactus Thorn' wasn't published until many years later, though apparently written in 1927. So here in 'Cactus Thorn' is another of Austin's imaginative journeys into the desert, and is a story about the relationship between a male politician with 'new' ideas, and a self-sufficient woman wanderer which includes many autobiographical undertones. The tale is set primarily in the lonesome, southwest desert lands of the 1920s.)
