John Wanamaker (TWO VOLUME-SET) Gibbons, Herbert Adams New York City, New York Harper & Brothers 1926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Dust Jacket Photographs ; Two-volume set; First Edition/First Printing; Oversize-heavy set (Volume one: 398 pages, Volume two: 497 pages with bibliography-index) ; Black & white frontispiece of Wanamaker as Postmaster-General in Volume One; Black & white frontispiece of The Philadelphia Store in Volume Two; Both volumes are generously Illustrated with full-page black & white plates (photographs); Textblock is tight & square with gently tanned pages on both volumes; Neat, brief gift inscription on front-free endpaper of both volumes; Top of textblock is gilt on both volumes; Fore-edge rough trimmed as published on both volumes; Black cloth-covered boards with small illustration at mid-center of front board on both volumes, title in gilt on spine of both volumes; Has modest shelf & edge wear including feint rubbing - some wear to tips/top-tail of spine, primarily bottom-right of volume one; A very good, solid, two-volume set; .....(This first edition/first printing is a biography of the life of John Wanaker (July 11, 1838 - December 12, 1922), who was a United States merchant, religious leader, civic and political figure, considered by some to be the father of modern advertising and a pioneer in marketing. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some of the marketing history is that Wanamaker opened his first store in 1861, called 'Oak Hall', at Sixth and Market Streets in Philadelphia, which was adjacent to the site of George Washington's Presidential home. In 1869, he opened his second store at 818 Chestnut Street renaming the company John Wanamaker & Co., and in 1875 he purchased an abandoned railroad depot, converting it into a large store called John Wanamaker & Co., and 'The Grand Depot' is considered the first department store in Philadelphia.)
