So Mrs. Drake at age 57 took off for Australia and then to China, which is the beginning of her story. She arrived in China in 1947 and went to Kunming where she received a position as professor of English at Yunnan University. She was there during the take-over by the Communists, and left in 1950 after Mao Tse-tung came into power, and was one of the last Americans to leave China after the Communist take-over.)
