The ngoni is the musical instrument favored by the djeli, the bard-historians attached to the kingdom's noble families, who recited the nobles' ancestry and the accomplishment of each generation. These narratives, which have been preserved orally for more than three hundred years, are about real people and events, and they contain within them many fragments of Segu's history.)
